From Rothenburg we drove south of Munich to Schliersee, where we rented a house and stayed for the remainder of our trip. Our first day there Ryan took Mom, Dad, Thys, Mia, Cody & Jess to see the beautiful Neuschwanstein Castle (we went last year with David & Tiffany)...I stayed back at our house rental with the littles for a day of snow play, games, gift wrapping and Christmas movie-watching. We took the train up to Munich the following day for a whirlwind trip through the Altstadt/Marienplatz & Christmas Market. I love that city and will forever have sweet holiday memories of watching the Glockenspiel chime in the Marienplatz, climbing the tower of St. Peters cathedral, roaming around the buzzing Christmas market, drinking Gingerbread milk with the kids, ice skating, and eating at the clamorous Hofbrauhaus. Will we ever have the chance to go back? I hope so! Frohe Weinachten!
Schloss Neuschwanstein,
the most famous of crazy King Ludwigs castles.
The castle was never finished after the kings mysterious death!
We played lots of Bananagrams and Uno in the evenings, at the lovely house where we shacked up.
While in Munich, we visited the town square (Marientplatz) where you find a large and lively Christmas Market during the holidays. Three times a day on the Marienplatz the bells chime the hour and initiate the music and dance of the Glockenspiel.
The dancers are celebrating an end to years of the Plague.
Here's our crew craning their necks for a good look...
We wandered a bit from the square/Christmas Market in search of lunch, but found some pretty rockin' street entertainers instead.
Eventually we found our way to the Hofbrauhaus, famous beer garden, where we feasted on a delicate menu of German sausage, pretzels, apple beer and roast chicken! Cody felt quite at home in the tavern.
A Christmas feast

The Marienplatz
A family of gargoyles
View of the Marienplatz from the top of St. Peters Cathedrals. We have made a habit of climbing any tower we can, and walking the city walls if there are ramparts left; it's just so nice to walk wherever we can, as well as catch great views of the cities/towns we are visiting.
That night I took Thys out for some birthday shopping while Ry and the kidlets went ice skating like last year. The others also wandered off to do some shopping. Before we knew it we were racing the clock to make our train back to Schliersee. Our crew was quite the sight, sprinting through the metro to the train station, then running through the train station and onto our train only in the St. Nick of time...but we made it! Phew!
